60% of Free-Tier Commercial Licensing Terms Changed in 15 Weeks Across 175 AI Tools ↗
Between June and October 2026, the ClipJury team conducted two reviews of the terms, pricing pages, and help centers of 175 AI tools. They found that 105 tools (60%) modified at least once the terms affecting whether free outputs could be legally used commercially within 15 weeks; among these, 56 changed again within 4 weeks. 31 changes increased creator risk, while only 6 reduced it. Lexica, PicLumen, and Suno explicitly tightened commercial usage permissions for their free tiers, while LOVO and PlayHT saw their licensing basis become invalid due to shutdowns. The study emphasizes that creators must screenshot and archive the terms page on the day of generation as evidence.
